Polachrome instant slide films were produced from 1983 to the late 1990s. At that time, the various instant photo processes of the Polaroid company were at the peak of acceptance among photographic artists.
The special thing about "Polachromes" was the fact that these films could be used in normal 35mm cameras. After exposure, they were treated in accordance with the Edwin Land patent from 1948, using the so-called separating process in a small desktop developing device.
The color effect of the finished slide results from the fact that after development, proportional to the developed amount of silver salt, the view of a line grid with 118 parallel lines of dye (in red, green and blue) per millimeter of film surface is released.
When enlarged to the 60x90cm format, this color grid can be clearly recognized in whole or in fragments and this effect gives the subject an appealing impression of the imperfect.
The pictures are printed on structured artist paper. This results in a perfect symbiosis of imperfect technology and a charming atmosphere.
This unique image effect is difficult to display on a computer monitor, it lives from its feel and should be looked at in original. In order to clarify the effect, some examples are shown here as excerpts from prints of the size 60x90cm.
